One of our buddies got married in Miami Beach last weekend. Josh and I had the opportunity to play several courses in Florida. Our first stop was at Kendall Indian Hammocks Park. The park has two 18 basket courses, the east side was established in 1996 and the west side was established in 2002.

We were told by some of the locals that there had been recent construction, and the layout of both courses was hard to follow in some cases. A couple of the baskets are really close to fences. One of our buddies lost a disc over one of them. On our second visit, we looked in the Lost and found box, and someone had left it for us (Thanks!).

Full set of pictures taken at the park.

This course was very cool. In North Florida we have a lot of Oak trees so it was nice to have a completely different looking course. If I am right I think the course has a lot of nice Banyan trees. I could be wrong but they looked like banyans. There are some uniques hole that took advantage of these trees making the hole look very nice. The land is flat which is what I expect from FL courses. There just isn't a lot of elevation here. Hole #1 starts out throwing over a driveway leading into the parking lot across an open field with the basket nestled in the middle of some trees. The first five or six holes are all nestled in this area. The layout can be a little confusing but like all courses ask the locals and watch where they go. #2 you come back to the left. It's a slight bend to the right with basket in a great postion surrounded by guardian trees. Hole #3 right now is a little confusing. You sorta cut back across #1 and throw from the walkway that cuts through. You have to look for the red stone marker and there is lines sprayed on the path to define the pad. Hole #4 I like a lot. It veers to the left right along the roadside. So I threw over the road and completely cut off the curve. Hole with a lot of risk. And if you go for it make sure you watch for cars. Hole #5 you cut back to the right and it is a short hole with the basket in the middle of an amazing Banyan tree. Even though it's a short hole I found there was a whole to like about the hole. #6 takes you along side the fence for the school on your right. Someone hasn't been playing a while with not a lot of control could find themselves over there. After the fence the hole cuts back really hard to the right and the basket is located about 150" after the turn. Hole #7 is one of the hole afftected by construction I think. THere are signs for it but it is a ways out there. You walk all the way across the parking lot to get to the pad. The hole is wide open until you get down to basket. It is located under a nice canopy of trees with some opportunities for 2 putts if you aren't lucky. Hole 8 was another recently moved hole...there was no sign and even some locals were confused with since it was there first time seeing it as well. You throw sorta at a building and let you disc fade out back to the left where the basket is surrounded by palmettos and various other trees. For hole #9 you walk to the back side of the building where the pad is located. You sorta can throw straight through a thicket of trees to get to the basket. Some people throw around it. Basket is located in a wonderfully shaded area surrounded by trees and wood on 3 sides of it. Hole #10 is well it is like the shape of a magnet. I opted to throw straight through the woods and cut the hole in half. Weird hole in a way but not too bad. The next section of the East Course breaks out into the wide open. The holes don't seem challenging since there are not many trees located in the surrounding ares and it is wide open. Then the wind comes into play. I am sure they have calm days out there...but ours was not. The wind can really howl so you have to know your disc or have some stable plastic. The last hole in the open leaves you throwing directly at SW107 St. it has the big park entrance made of brick behind it. Still it's quite scary to think of. The wind is whirling and the road is located 40ft past the pin. If you have a big arm you will scale it back for this hole. Last thing I wanted to do was nail a car driving through Miami. No Fun. Makes this an interesting hole though. After that you cross to hole #13 I think. This hole is nestled into a little patch of land against the road. It's really noisy here...not that it matters but that is all I can remember at this hole is us having to yell just to hear over the wind and the traffic. After this you cross over the street again....Hole #14 is in the open and reachable with a little s curve or flip shot...then you come to #15. While the green is gorgeous...basket in the middle of a banyan that looks just awesome...you have to throw over the road. I am not keen on designs like this to be honest. Just for the fact when a car gets hit there is always an issue....especially if the car has a top down or you happen to go through the window. I just don't like the thought of it. There is always more room to make a hole safer IMO. #16 was a hard dog right cutting through lots of trees. Hit the right line though and this hole definitely makes you feel better about you day. The basket is nicely tucked away in the back corner of a clearing. #17 Runs along the roadside with the basket tucked into the corner. Not a very long hole but a perfect DG hole. Then there was hole #18. As far as I am concerned this was the signature hole of the course. You throw from an elevated teepad. You have a hedge of bushes that runs about 300ft down to your right. The teepad is elevated on a hill about 10-15ft up with the base being full of trees that run the length of the hole. Hitting early on this hole can spell trouble. It is one of the longest holes of the East course if not the longest. THe hill gradually gets smaller and about 250ft down from the pad the land levels back out. I had a putt for a birdie on this hole. Was defintely one of my best drives. I loved the finish of the east course #18 was a great hole. Also as hex1848 pointed out...our buddy had thrown a disc over the fence...he said to leave it being though I jumped the fence 3 times and he found it so it didn't matter. Well the next day it was in the lost of found box...so props to the DGers of Miami. I love the fact that we got the disc back eventhough he didn't care. People usually don't call from our course anymore and just keep it. So I love the fact that they didn't and "returned" the disc. Everyone I spoke to at the course was very nice and was more than willing to help you out in your travels across the park. The local club also seems to be very active and nice people. If you live in the area and didn't know feel free to visit there site. www.miamidiscgolf.com . Also it's a great way to meet some locals if you know you are going to be visiting S.Fla. That way you might be able to arrange someone to play with you your first time through.

    Pros:
    • Nice Foliage
    • Cement Tee Boxs
    • Teebox Signs
    • Some Benches

    Cons:
    • Course can be hard to follow
    • Although there are post at everyhole...hole info not at everyhole
